Paul’s Heartache

The words of 2 Timothy 4 offer wisdom that’s unique to this book. Paul is at the end of life, and we get to listen to how he talks to his closest friend.

Sure, we get to listen to Jesus talk to close friends at the end of his life, especially in John 14–17, but 2 Timothy offers us something more like our own situation — post-resurrection, waiting for Jesus to return, trying to be faithful to the work of the gospel, and facing the hardship and suffering of death.

Here’s seven statements from 2 Timothy 4 that I find moving. These statements always ignite my imagination:

  1. “Hurry to come before winter.” (2 Tim 4:21)
  2. “At my first defense, no one showed up. Everyone abandoned me. May it not be held against them. The Lord showed up for me and strengthened me.” (2 Tim 4:16–17)
  3. “Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm.” (2 Tim 4:14)
  4. “Bring the coat I left in Troas … bring the scrolls and especially the parchments.” (2 Tim 4:13)
  5. “Hurry to come to me quickly.” (2 Tim 4:9)
  6. “Demas left me because he lived the present age and went into Thessalonica.” (2 Tim 4:10)
  7. “I’m already being poured out, and the time of my departure is at hand.” (2 Tim 4:6)
