In May of 2021, this site will be ten years old, and I intend to keep it going. Why would someone choose to blog in 2021? It is now way cooler to have a podcast or YouTube channel. My answer has two parts but is simple.
First, I blog because I enjoy writing — especially writing on a computer. This is the heart of the matter, but it isn’t enough to justify blogging. I could, after all, just type words into Ulysses, and keep those thoughts to myself. That’s journaling, something else I enjoy.
The second part is important: I have things I want to share. When you enjoy writing and you write about things you enjoy, it’s the most natural thing in the world to want to share those thoughts with friends and others who might be interested. A blog is a cheap, easy way to share things you write. There’s no character limitation, and at least to my mind, compared to other social media platforms, there seem to be far less privacy and mental health issues associated with blogging.
So there is my concise defense of blogging in 2021. You might hear critiques and reasons why you shouldn’t blog. “Blogging is dead” or “It’s just vain self-promotion” or “Who does that anymore?” You have to come to grips, however, with the fact that there are tons of opinions and critiques out there, and not all of them are applicable to you.
If you enjoy writing and want to share your writing, then blog. Blog to your heart’s content! Nothing more; nothing less. Post as frequently or infrequently as you like. No pressure. Enjoy and share!
